Due to the recent opening of the Irving Oil Garage directly across from the Gorham Fire Station a possible traffic hazard now exists which must be recognized. Not only will the departing equipment be faced with traffic coming from both directions, but also be coming from both of the two exits which the garage has.

This letter will establish a policy which all drivers must operate under when operating any Fire Dept. equipment .

When leaving the fire station, and reaching the main highway, the equipment must be brought to a full stop. The driver is responsible to make sure that traffic coming from any direction, which could come in contact with the piece of fire equipment he is operating, comes to a stop before he proceeds to enter the highway.

I realize that this might cause a short delay in response time, of that piece of equipment. However one accident would cause the piece of equipment to be tied up for some time.

I have looked into the possibility of having the N.H. State Highway people take a look at our situation and see if flashing lights and signs could be established in place which would help us. However I must address the immediate problem.

The use of lights and sirens does not always guarantee that we will get the right of way.

If this procedure seems to cause any problems, we will take a further look at the situation.
